This remarkable new Passive House project in Waikuku, Canterbury, is designed to exemplify sustainable building practices while achieving exceptional comfort levels for its residents.

The project prioritises sustainability throughout the design and construction process. Reusable steel piles and upcycled packaging waste for internal linings significantly reduce the home's environmental impact. Stiebel Eltron's LWZ 280 Mechanical Heat Recovery Ventilation Unit (MVHR) plays a vital role in this strategy. The unit recovers heat from exhaust air, transferring it to incoming fresh air, minimising energy consumption for heating and ventilation.

The success of this project is a testament to the collaboration between various stakeholders. Finbo Construction Project Management ensured smooth execution, while VIA Architecture provided Passive House and carbon consulting expertise. Ethos Homes, an experienced Passive House builder, brought their prefabrication expertise to the table, significantly speeding up construction.

The occupants of the Waikuku Passive House are already experiencing the benefits of their new home. The MVHR unit and meticulous design ensure a comfortable indoor environment year-round, with minimal heating needs and effective summer temperature control. The home is also participating in the BRANZ HEEP2 study, contributing valuable data to New Zealand's understanding of household energy use.
